There’s a real gap between a “web developer” and someone who’s actually built a store that has to survive Diwali sale traffic. Anyone can spin up a WooCommerce demo with five t-shirts in it. Fewer have dealt with what happens when a catalog hits 800 SKUs with size and colour variants and the filters start breaking.
We picked up a project from an electronics seller in Hadapsar whose previous developer had, by their own admission, “never really done e-commerce before.” The store looked fine with ten products loaded for the demo. The moment the real catalog went in, category pages started duplicating themselves and checkout broke on UPI specifically. We ended up rebuilding the catalog structure from scratch rather than patching it, which is usually cheaper in the long run than it sounds.
What actually separates the developers who know e-commerce from the ones who dabble:
Ask how many live products are on their example stores. If it’s under twenty, that’s still a demo, not proof they’ve handled scale. Reach out to talk through your catalog .
